Bao Down Review

I decided to try Bao Down because it was near our class. It's in Gastown, a bit further down from the clock. It's a tiny restaurant, there are more seats upstairs. I've always wanted to make my own baos but as usual, I'm lazy and busy. I will someday...someday. They actually notified us that their baos are smaller than normal so it's $2 off the original price ($7). I thought it's nice of them to do that. Well, if they don't do that they may get complaints. I also like how they notified us about pricing ahead of time, not like some other places...

It's one of those order before you eat places, and you clean up after yourself when you are done. I guess it's really popular type of "service" nowadays?

I got the 2 world collide ($5) and the kimchi fries ($7). My friend got the YVR ($5). The baos weren't that big, nor were the fries. The bao had an ok thickness and it's just like those Chinese man tou but thin version. I thought they had too much sauce on, it made the bao wet and it was starting to rip and fall apart. My friend thought so too and it made her hands super messy. I know if there isn't as much sauce, it will be dry and maybe no taste. I didn't find the pork belly on my bao to be crispy, maybe because the sauce? The taste was not bad. The kimchi fries was recommended to try (online reviews) so I ordered to see what so good about it. I thought it was kimchi made into fries (which would be interesting) or something but it's just fries topped with kimchi, bean spouts, crispy pork belly and seasoning. It taste good, enough flavour, little kick from the kimchi, the pork belly was crispy, fries had a good texture. I normally don't like kimchi but their kimchi was ok. My friend thinks it's unique.

I thought their ideas were creative but I don't think it was worth the price. It was good to try but I don't think I will go back again unless if friends want to.
